A certificated member of the Guild of Craft Soap & Toiletry Makers (GCSTM)
I have recently applied and been accepted to be a member of the Guild of Craft Soap & Toiletry Makers (GCSTM). The guild is a non-commercial peer support network that provides information and guidelines about handmade soap crafting and the UK/EU legislation that regulates the cosmetics and toiletries industry.
All cosmetics sellers, including the full range of soap and/or bath & body products, must have product safety assessments in place before they can legally be placed on the market. Once assessed, all products must then be registered via the Office for Product Safety & Standards (OPSS) on the UK Government Portal.
A major reason for the existence of the Guild is to raise awareness of the Cosmetics Products (Safety) Regulations. The legislation sets standards. It aims to ensure that every ingredient in hand-crafted soap and toiletry products is safe to use. Some ingredients are banned because they’ve been found by scientific testing to be potentially harmful. Other products are banned or restricted because they contain potential allergens. The aim of the legislation is to protect the general public and the craft soap and toiletry maker.
Well trees fascinate me and when searching for a name for my soap I picked Duir because it means Oak.
It is the seventh tree of the Ogham (pronounced Oh-ham). It means strength and honour. Trees are ancient and Oak stands at England’s heart. Trees are special to me, if one ancient oak that has stood hundreds of years could speak, what tales could it tell? The number of people & animals that have passed it by or taken shelter under its canopy, leant on it for support or just sat beside it, blows my mind. Trees also regulate rainfall, they help to cool the earth and help to clean the air.
I use only sustainable oils and butters to make my soap. No palm oil is used in any of my products, they are all cruelty free, not tested on animals and handmade in small batches by me in Dorset. All my soaps are free from parabens (a chemical preservative) and sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) which is a chemical that works as a surfactant.
I have ensured that all of my wrapping can either be upcycled, composted or ethically recycled.
So why make soap? I am a crafter at heart and have been making things since I was old enough to either use a needle and thread or use a pair of scissors! I wanted to try something new and my husband gave me for Christmas a soap making kit. I had so some much fun mixing scents and colours, using different moulds and having a product that my friends & family could benefit from was fabulous. I decided to find out more about how soap is made and here I am…. I don’t think my husband ever thought I would add his beer to it though!.
